You are allowed only 3 benchings per season. There are 2 seasons. The first season starts in the summer and concludes when football is over, including CIF games. The second season starts when Basketball practice begins and could overlap football season. a. One unexcused absence from any assigned event, practice or meeting scheduled by the Pep Squad advisor. b. All excused absences will need to be “made up”. Make ups will be determined by the advisor and failure to so in a timely manner will result in a benching. c. Being sent home from a practice or game for bad conduct. Depending on the circumstances this could result in dismissal. d. Leaving an event, game, fundraiser, practice or meeting early, without the approval of the Pep squad advisor, will result in a benching for that game and/or event plus the next game and/or event. Depending on the circumstance this could result in dismissal. e. Inappropriate behavior, including attitude, belligerence, defiance, skipping school, failure to wear the correct school uniform, etc. Continuous inappropriate behavior will result in dismissal. f. Being absent from a game unless under documented illness or a family emergency (parent notification required). g. Suspension from school will more than likely result in a double benching. However, depending on circumstances, if it is deemed that the pep squad member is suspended for an act unbecoming of a Varsity pep squad member, that member will be dismissed. h. Special circumstances will be handled as they arise. Having an excused absence during a practice where material has been taught requires the i. pep squad member to make up lost work on her/his own time. Failure to do so may mean the squad member will not perform during the event the material was meant for. An evaluation may be done to determine if the squad member is ready to perform. Having too many excused absences may result in the squad member not performing if it is deemed detrimental to the performance. However, a non-performance in these cases will not be considered a benching. j. 1 benching per 20 demerits. 2. Definitions of types of absences: a. Unexcused Absences i. transportation ii. work iii. vacation iv. homework v. non-notification of absence vi. routine appointments case by case basis (medical and dental included) b. Excused Absences i. required, scheduled classes (teacher note required) ii. documented illness (doctors note {notes can be faxed to me @ 384-1554}, one ex. Absence per note) iii. unavoidable family emergencies (parent notification)iv. Excused absence from school v. Notification before practicevi. Unavoidable out of town appts. with a doctors note. (It’s understandable that we have doctors out of town, however, try your hardest to be at every practice and try not to have appts made on Thursdays. If you fail to bring a doctor’s note to the coach the absence will be deemed unexcused and a benching will occur. If you forget, fax it to me as soon as possible.vii. All excused absences must be made up. c. Tardy- For every squad member that is tardy the entire squad will have additional conditioning. i. Five minutes late to any practice, game, fund raiser, event, meeting, etc. ii. 3 tardies = 1 unexcused absence B. Dismissal from the Pep Squad will result from any of the following actions. If dismissed from the pep squad for reasons 2,3, or 4, the squad member will not be eligible to tryout for next year’s squad. 1. Failing to meet the grading criteria as shown above. 2. More than three benchings per season. 3. Conduct deemed inappropriate for Pep Squad members (e.g. poor sportsmanship, rudeness, poor attitude, expulsion from school, taking advantage of position, walking out of practice in a defiant manner etc.). 4. Failure to abide by the school’s athletic/activities code. C. If a member quits at any time for any reason, the member may be (1) ineligible to try out for the Pep Squad the following year. 1. If a squad member is going to quit it is incumbent upon the parent to meet with the Advisor and Administration to discuss the situation. VI. Insurance Coverage Currently enrolled BHS students are covered by the Burroughs High School’s accident insurance policy. This policy contains an excess provision which means the policy is only supplemental to the benefits provided by any other collectible insurance. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that Pep Squad applicants carry private major medical insurance. VII. Lettering policy and demerits:A. copy of the lettering policy and demerits will be given to each cheerleader. These apply per season.
